The Southlander Chronicles Session 3: Fear Within
Don’t Run Down Narrow Stairs When You’re Wearin’ Spurs
We left the witch’s place and decided to find where them monsters were living. He needed meenlock eyes and some of the moss they grow in their burrows. Big Clyde was able to sniff out where the faerie borderlands was and we met a brownie who took us to the meenlock burrow. They took care of Charlotte for me while we went in. We tried a buncha stuff to get the meenlocks to come out, but none of it was working. We made traps, we tried using Larry as bait because meenlocks like eating fear, but Larry was just too brave so it didn’t work. We’d just have to go into the burrow.
It was a lot bigger on the inside than it looked outside. But that’s pretty normal for faerie stuff. We didn’t want nobody to get lost or nothing, so we used some rope Sledge had to tie ourselves together at the waist. It was pretty dark in the burrow too, so Sledge took the lead since he could see everything alright. He don’t see like we do, he’s better at it and don’t need light. We entered and there wasn’t a whole lot there. The burrows was like a maze so we stuck to one side and followed it the whole way, like how you’re supposed to in the stories. Some meenlocks attacked us, but they wasn’t too much a problem. They had this uh. Venom stuff that if you get stung by it you see your nightmares. Because that’s what meenlocks do, they eat your fear. One of ‘em got me during a scuffle. It wasn’t great. I uh.. don’t want to talk about it much. But it’s the same stuff we saw in our dreams. When we’re restless and the moon is getting brighter. Except then I just didn’t handle it as well. It don’t scare me now, but it shook me bad then.
Anyway, I’m not really sure what we did after that exactly. I wasn’t hallucinating anymore, but the venom was still in my system and my head wasn’t clear. It was like trying to cut through a dense bunch of brambles with a dull knife. I just wasn’t myself, I wasn’t doing good. By then we’d got all the ingredients we needed for the witch, we just needed to get ourselves outta there. We fell when we first went in, probably a good 15-20 feet. So we were all sorts of turned around. We’d been hearing the sound of somebody screaming but we wasn’t sure if there was actually somebody who needed help or if it was the faeries playing tricks on us. But while we were trying to make our escape is when we found him.
